Join me as I take you on a journey to Astakos, a quiet harbor town on the Ionian Sea that deserves so much more than just being a stopover on the way to the islands. From staying at the hillside Giannis Village Resort, to exploring the charming harbor and enjoying fresh crayfish (Astacus astacus) by the sea, this trip was full of authentic Greek experiences.
We set sail with local fisherman Captain George to the Echinades Islands, where history comes alive with tales of the Lamian War and the legendary Battle of Lepanto. Along the way, we learned about the proud fishing traditions of Astakos, now shared with visitors through unique fishing tourism experiences.
Back in town, we wandered through neoclassical homes, heard stories of Astakos’ oak trade, and visited the birthplace of Pantelis Karasevdas, Olympic champion of 1896. We also met local entrepreneurs: Lemonofarma, making pure lemonade from local citrus, and the Kalantzis family of Astakos Olives, producing some of the finest olives and cold-pressed olive oil in Greece.
